Amphitheatres
Amphitheatres
Amphitheatres were the centre of entertainment in Roman times. An Amphitheatre was a huge oval-shaped open-air stone stadium. Spectators would gather at amphitheatres to watch plays, religious ceremonies, acrobatic displays and most importantly, gladiator battles.
Interestingly, gladiator battles were not always held in amphitheatres; the very first gladiator battles were actually held in grave yards.
The largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire was the Colosseum in Rome. It could seat up to 50,000 people and had 18 entrances. Click here to find out more about the colosseum
