Types of Gladiators

There were many different types of Gladiators who had different fighting styles and fought with different weapons, protective equipment and costumes. Gladiator armour was designed to look good but offered very little protection in battle.

Murmillo

A murmillo was a heavily armoured with a large rectangular shield with a protrusion in the centre, a sharp dagger and a helmet with a fish crest on it. Although the helmet was highly protective, it was also problematic as it obstructed the gladiator's vision

Retiarius

A retiarius would be armed with a net and a trident (a large three pronged spear). For protection, only his left arm and shoulder was covered with armour.
